Feature Friday: Single Sign-on
Behind the scenes, we are working hard on our Intelligent Data Protection Platform. To keep you informed on all developments, we will share a (new or updated) feature every Friday in our “Feature Friday.”
Last week we discussed end-to-end encryption, a secure method to encrypt your data. Today we will tell you more about user-friendliness. The feature of today will be Single sign-on or SSO.
So, let's just begin by thinking about what problems we face when securing data. Let's say, if you work with a system where you process and share personal data, you don't want just anyone to get access to that data. One thing we can do is making sure our logins - both username and passwords - are strong enough. And of course, not accessible for anyone but ourselves. Because from a hacker's perspective, names, addresses emails and passwords are gold. A few years ago, Yahoo lost passwords of all its accounts - this caused a major data breach.
What if you, as an organization, could avoid such a disaster? What if you could manage the way and frequency people log in, to avoid hackers to get grip on this data? Imagine: once you and your employees get into a system, it's unlikely for unauthorized people to chase your logins since it won't be accessible anymore. This is where Single sign-on comes to the rescue.
What is Single sign-on?
Single sign-on, or SSO, is a system that allows websites to use other websites to verify users. This means that you don't have to sign-in every time, on every website, if these websites are connected (or if the password holding organization has approved on sharing this password). Just to keep in short: when you've signed in for the first time, your logins will be remembered, so the next you use the system you don't have to sign in again.
The benefits? There are quite a few:
- It is safe because decreasing every login attempt also decreases the chance of data being stolen/hacked. This is convenient for both the user as you as an organization;
- It is user-friendly. As a user, you don't have to login every time you use a system. Imagine if you'd work from home, but need to log in in every system you use at work. At some point, it could be a hassle!
- You can win a lot of time with this since you don't have to go through long sign-up processes.
How SmartLockr uses SSO
SmartLockr has integration with ADFS. What it does? With one account it is possible to login to multiple systems, within a company network. To be precise: from the admin portal, ADFS details will be configured - the right settings will be done. Once configured, the user will be redirected to the ADFS login page. With the right ADFS ID, users can log in to all websites connected to this ID. Since all systems are connected, there is no need to log in next time these systems will be used.
